For such Macs, Lunar’s best hardware solution relied on a Raspberry Pi to relay commands from a Mac to the external HDMI monitor. More importantly, it just worked, and it worked reliably.īack then, Lunar was using an awesome hack for those of us who wanted to use an M1 based Mac. Even cooler, it could automatically control the brightness based on your location and sync the brightness of an external monitor with the built-in monitor of a MacBook. Its website featured a plethora of options, including a wide range of customizable keyboard shortcuts. Eventually I found an app that could control the brightness and contrast of my Dell monitor on an M1 based Mac.ĭeveloped by Alin Panaitiu, Lunar has seen constant development, culminating with its official release in late May 2021.
It’s slow and it’s awkward and I always hit the wrong buttons and end up feeling like a fool. To control these settings, I have to navigate its hierarchy of on-screen menus, which requires pressing one of the buttons, using another button to move up or down in the right submenu, a third button to select brightness and go back to a previous button to adjust brightness up or down. For example, my monitor has four buttons at the bottom, but they don’t adjust the brightness or contrast. Obviously I could use the buttons on my monitor, like some kind of animal, but as anyone who has used such controls knows: they are terrible. All the tools I could find needed DDC support, which is why none of them worked on M1 based Macs. The reason seems to be that M1-based Macs don’t support DDC or Display Data Channel, a standard set of control protocols that monitors have used for many years. I started digging deeper and realized I wasn’t alone: each of these tools had someone tell me that they don’t work with M1 based Macs and that it doesn’t. However, Intel-based Mac owners can use a variety of command line and graphics tools for this purpose, but none of them seem to work on my M1 based Mac mini.

Of course, that’s not a problem with Apple monitors like the old Thunderbolt Display, today’s insanely expensive Pro Display XDR, or Apple-approved LG UltraFine monitors.įor reasons I don’t understand, macOS doesn’t support these settings when using a third-party display outside of the few models mentioned above. As it turns out, Macs can’t necessarily control brightness on external displays with built-in options (like the Brightness slider in System Preferences> Monitors). I assumed that I would be able to control the brightness of my monitor using the standard keys on a Mac keyboard or the brightness slider in System Preferences.
